In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry set in a Utopian future, the main character Jonas is finally going to become a Twelve signifying the end of his childhood and the beginning of his training for his assigned job. He is a bit apprehensive about the upcoming Ceremony because he has no idea what his Assignment could be. When the day finally arrives, Jonas’ friend Asher gets the Assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation. Then Fiona, Jonas’ other friend, is given the Assignment of Caretaker of the old. Jonas’ turn is fast approaching and then it’s gone. He gets skipped… until the end. He gets called very last—which is not where he was supposed to be called—because he’s been selected not assigned to his job. He is to become the new Receiver of Memory. At first he does not understand what this job entails but knows that it’s a very high honor to be selected for this. He begins his training and gets memories from the old Receiver, now called The Giver. Some memories are happy like the ones where he learns colors and about snow. But others are painful, like war, starvation, disease, and freezing. Since his job is so honored Jonas can basically do anything he wants, like watching the release of a newchild, which is forbidden to anyone else. Jonas soon realizes that the Community he lives in isn't as perfect as he thought.
