Point of View in The Giver
The point of view that the book The Giver is written in would be third person limited. I know it is third person because the narrator uses "Jonas" and "he" instead of "I" like in first person point of view. I also know that the narrator is limited to only see inside of Jonas' head because other people's thoughts are not heard, only Jonas'. One example of the story written in third person would be, "He laughed softly. Thinking about the Ceremony again, Jonas? He teased himself" (Lowry 29). This shows that the narrator is in Jonas' head but uses "he" so we know that Jonas is not the narrator. Another example would be "But now Jonas had experienced real sadness. He had felt grief. He knew that there was no quick comfort for emotions like those” (Lowry 132). This shows that the narrator is third person because if it was 1st person it would say ‘I’ like I said before, but it says Jonas instead so we can really tell that Jonas is not the narrator. With the textual evidence presented, it is obvious that the point of view in The Giver is 3rd person limited.
